This week was pretty decent. One of the highlights was running my first command. I'm an official computer programmer, now. We moved church buildings recently, and we're friends with the church facilities management group, so when they needed someone a little more tech-savvy to help them set up the firewall, they called and asked us to lend a hand.
This is a picture of the program running. We had to set up the firewall with new files, because the old IP address was static. So, I had to ping the firewall to see if it was processing the files. It turned out that just pinging the firewall wouldn't do anything, so we had to call Salt Lake and have them work out the problem remotely. Still a super fun job to do, and they bought us pizza afterwards, so I was pretty happy.
I also dropped a few pounds this week- getting better about eating salads every day, and limiting how much I eat out, as well as the sweets I eat. I want to keep this trend going, and I'm excited about the changes I'm going to see.
Javy's life got a little harder this week. His cousin with whom he's living with is very opposed to him going on a mission. So opposed, in fact, that he's evicting him. The branch is really helping him to find another room, and we're doing everything we can to help him prepare for his mission. He's still got some open road ahead of him before he's ready to leave, but we're here to help him walk it.
We had a great lesson with a less active named Victoria and her non member esposo Jose. They've been having a hard time keeping their commitment to read the scriptures, so we decided to read the scriptures with them. Jose can't really read, so we listened to 2 Nephi 2 on Gospel Library app. Victoria was riveted to her copy of the Book of Mormon. Jose had some great questions, and we were able to teach him what sin is, and how children are born without sin, and how the fall was a necessary part of the plan. I really felt a strong impression to bear testimony of the power and miracle of the atonement. The spirit was so strong, and it's been one of my favorite lessons here in Freeport.
I don't like the rain right now. It's just so hard to do anything while it's raining. It rained, like, five times this week, and here in New York, when it rains it pours. There was a huge lightning and thunder storm on Friday. The Lightning and thunder were pretty much right on top of us! It was pretty sweet.
On Sunday we were eating dinner, and we got a little call from the sisters. It turns out that Sister McDowell turned into the curb a little too hard, and popped a tire. We hurried to finish eating, and while we did some dude started helping them. The car was on an incline, so the jack slipped. In order to keep the axle from touching the ground, he put the popped tire under the front bumper. This bent the bumper.
We got there, and the dude left. We tried to get the jack to work, but the incline just kept it slipping off. Finally, a guy from Panama came along and gave us a bigger jack. He helped us position the jack a little different so that we could fix the tire. Our picture of him working the jack is pretty funny.
All was made well- the bumper unbent with very little lasting damage. The sisters were super grateful, and will probably be making us some cookies sometime in the near future :) Sometimes service brings material blessings like cookies, and those are the days where Heavenly Father opens the windows of heaven.
Love,
